About the project

Kupala Night, also known as Ivan Kupala Day (Feast of St. John the Baptist) is celebrated in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia currently on the night of 6/7 July in the Gregorian calendar.

The fest has pagan roots. According to an ancient pagan belief, on the eve of Ivan Kupala is the only time of the year when ferns bloom. Prosperity, luck and power would befall whoever finds a fern flower. On that night village folks would roam through the forests in search of magical herbs and especially the elusive fern flower.

Traditionally, unmarried women would be the first to enter the forest. They are followed by young men. In 2010, they were also followed by Ken who made fantastic photo series.
